The Home Therapies Team of the Hortense and Louis Rubin Dialysis Center, Inc. offer a new, smaller, more user friendly home dialysis machine.
The NxStage System OneTM, a simple, modular unit of only 70 pounds. The self contained Pureflow water (dialysate) preparation system has greatly reduced water consumption and reduces room needed for dialysis supplies in your home. The automated set up is designed to make this a quicker, more "user friendly" treatment option than other equipment previously available for home hemodialysis use.
In addition to making the health benefits of daily therapy more accessible, the ability to travel with your NxStage machine and have your supplies sent to you at that location is another benefit of this "patient friendly" technology. Our Nephrologists can now prescribe either extended or short-daily dialysis therapy (where you choose the time of day to do your treatment) - using the same NxStage machine. Many dialysis patients can take advantage of the ease of use, more time for family or work, and the ability to travel with NxStage.
This "simple, flexible, portable dialysis" allows the patient
to have treatment when it is most convenient to their schedules ... not ours.

The largest of its kind, the NxStage® FREEDOM Study is designed to compare the clinical and economic benefits of more frequent home hemodialysis with traditional, thrice-weekly in-center hemodialysis.
Daily Nocturnal Hemodialysis With Remote Monitoring
Since 1998 The Hortense and Louis Rubin Dialysis Center, Inc. has offered extended home hemodialysis therapy with remote Internet monitoring. This therapy allows patients to dialyze on their schedules (not ours!)–with, OR without a partner. This therapy was originally known as Nocturnal Home Hemodialysis because most patients choose to dialyze at night while they slept, allowing them to wake up refreshed and ready to go about their daily activities– essentially, living their life to the fullest.
Many research studies have stated that ‘more dialysis is better’ and patients that opt for this type of dialysis have much more liberalization of their diet and fluid intake. These patients generally require fewer medications, have more energy, report thinking more clearly, and have fewer hospital visits than in-center dialysis therapy. Benefits such as reductions inrestless leg syndrome and sleep apnea have been reported.
This is the therapy of choice for the patient who wants to be in control of their chronic disease and believes their investment of time in training (2 to 3 weeks average) and feeling much better is worth it.
We offer ‘remotely staff assisted partnering’
via our trained Observers watching your machine readings via the Internet. You do NOT have to have a partner–since our Rubin Observer, backed up by our Home training RNs, will be your ‘remote partner’. As long as you can fit your treatments between 5pm to 9am, awake or sleeping, you can use this extended dialysis therapy.
Peritoneal Dialysis (PD)
Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) is a treatment that is done at home. It requires the use of a soft, flexible catheter to be inserted into the abdomen. Fluid, called dialysate, is allowed to flow through the catheter into the abdomen, where it dwells for a period of time. This infused dialysate absorbs excess toxins and fluid that your own kidneys can no longer do. The dialysate is drained and replaced with fresh fluid either several times during the day or by a machine at night while you sleep. There are no needles for this type of therapy and the many benefits include: maintaining your residual kidney function longer, less restrictions on diet and fluid intake, less or no insurance co-pays. It allows you a flexible schedule, and the ability to travel. Training takes 1 to 2 weeks, the supplies are delivered to your home monthly. Our Rubin Center Home Therapies team is on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to support our patients.
