Medication Safety
by Joanne Monaghan, NP

Please tell us if another health care provider starts you on a new medication. We need to know because this may impact the medication we give you and the lab tests we monitor

Remember to bring in all of your prescription bottles monthly for review by the dialysis staff. Knowing your current doses is important especially when you go into the hospital or go to another provider, to ensure you receive the correct dose.

Please ask for your refill prescriptions ahead of time so your medications do not run out. It is helpful to know if your want a 30 or 90 day supply.

Remember we usually ask that you NOT take blood pressure medications before your dialysis treatment. This can cause your blood pressure to be too low and impact how you feel that day.

Let us know if you experience undesirable side effects from your medications. It is possible that a medication adjustment could help.

If you are given an antibiotic, you will need to finish all of the medication, even if you feel better after a few doses. Not taking the whole dose can prolong your infection and make it more difficult to treat.

Remember to take antibiotics AFTER dialysis and avoid taking with PhosLo or Renagel at the same time, as these medications which could interfere with drug absorption.

If you are going to have surgery, don't forget to tell the doctor if you are taking any blood thinners such as: aspirin, coumadin or plavix. These medications are usually not given immediately prior to an operation in order to prevent bleeding problems.

Remember to tell us if you take any over-the-counter products or herbal items. These can sometimes interfere with your prescribed medications and can be dangerous.

Please tell us all of your drug allergies and carry a list in your wallet or purse.

Taking multiple medications on a daily basis is a fact of life for dialysis patients. Our goal is to ensure that your medications are taken safely and that you benefit from what you are given.
